Mallorca
Culture, sport and history
The beautiful island of Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, with some 3,000 square metres, it sits proudly in the Mediterranean Sea. The Spanish island is known for its welcoming culture and lovely beaches. Sunny Mallorca; a blissful place to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. A place where siesta is still observed and boulevards are strolled. Spanish and Catalan are spoken, but the island is so special that they also have their own language: Mallorquin.
Mallorca certainly has a sporting character too. Every year, the famous cycling races the Challenge Mallorca and the 312 are organised here. In addition, top tennis players Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moyà and MotoGP driver Jorge Lorenzo were born on the Spanish island. So a sporty Spanish island!
Besides culture and sport, Mallorca's history is also evident. Traces of the Romans, Arabs, Greeks and Europeans can be found everywhere, but especially in the landscape and culture. Mallorca has a rich and varied history. In Mallorca's capital, Palma, you will discover extraordinary royal buildings. For example, the cathedral, the palace and the king's summer residence. Mallorca owes its name to the Greek settlers who founded the Heracles Maliorcas, a blessed temple, on the island.
Weather and climate
If you have visited Mallorca before, the climate is bound to have stayed with you. Thanks to its subtropical climate, temperatures are almost always the same warm and stable throughout the year. Winters are milder than on the Spanish mainland, as the coastal mountains block many cold fronts. With an average temperature in Palma of 21.4° C and around 7 hours of sunshine per day, you could say the climate is blissful. This makes a (cycling) visit to Mallorca a good idea all year round!
